Grow as a professional
Your future in Dutch dentistry
Dentistry is an important part of the Dutch healthcare system. Patients expect the best care, and clinics work constantly to meet that demand.
Dutch clinics also offer a wide array of treatments. As a dentist in the Netherlands, you are expected to have a broad orientation in dentistry, which will allow you to adjust your treatment plan to the exact needs of the patient. This makes a Dutch dental clinic the place to be to develop yourself as a professional who is capable in the full spectrum of dentistry.
In addition, the annual shortage of new dentistry graduates means that the Dutch dentistry market is in constant need of ambitious dentists such as yourself, who are eager to take up the challenge to uphold the good reputation of dentistry in the Netherlands.
A steady career path
Adventurous, but also secure
As of 2019, BGB offers dentists the option to be directly employed by BGB Dentistry. But what does this mean?
For starters, we can now guarantee you a job and a salary. Seeing as, under this construction, you are employed by BGB, you will receive a fixed salary every month from the moment you start working in the Netherlands. Of course, you will still work in a dental clinic that we help find for you, but even if you temporarily do not have a clinic, you will still receive your salary as we find you a new clinic to work in. We can also guarantee you that your salary will increase at certain milestones, such as passing your Dutch language exam and being included in the Dutch registry for healthcare workers.
By giving you these guarantees, we make sure that you, the dentist, will be able to focus fully on learning the language and building your career in Dutch dentistry.
Perhaps you prefer the old system, under which you are employed directly by the clinic. This is still a possibility! It is up to you to choose what fits you best.
Being a dentist in the Netherlands is amazing
The dentist as a vital medical professional
In the Netherlands, dentistry is widely regarded as one of the cornerstones of medical care. After all, dental health provides a good basis for general health: problems that start in the mouth, if left untreated, will likely have an effect on the overall health of the patient.
The view on dentistry within Dutch society means that a considerable part of the dental treatments that take place within our dental clinics are preventive, rather than reactive in nature. Patients go in for regular check-ups once or twice per year. Over the year 2018, 80% of the Dutch citizens visited a dentist at least once.
As important medical professionals, dentists are respected by their patients. This also means that patients expect good treatments from the person treating them. In Holland, the prices of treatments are fixed, so there is no competition based on price: only on quality. This makes the country an excellent place for dentists who want to focus constantly improving as professionals.
From Skype to Amsterdam: Interviews
Pleased to meet you!
When you get in touch with us through our website, the next step is getting to know each other via Skype interviews. During the first interview, we will discuss why you would like to come to the Netherlands, what you expect from Dutch dentistry and BGB, and what your ambitions and objectives are as a professional. We will also go into more detail about the project to give you an idea of what your road towards the Netherlands will look like, and what you can expect once you get here. During the second interview, we will discuss a clinical case, so we can get an idea of where you stand in terms of your knowledge and skill.
Once we both decide that we would like to cooperate, the next step is inviting you to our final interview sessions, which will take place at our HQ in Amsterdam. There, we will discuss the contract and go through everything that we have to arrange to get you started. One of our dentists, Job and Rita, will also be present. With them, you will have a conversation about dentistry in the Netherlands, so we can learn more about your knowledge and philsophy regarding dentistry, and in turn you can learn more about the amazing world of Dutch dentistry.
Seefeld: The experience of a lifetime
Learning Dutch at the BGB Academy
The BGB Academy is located in a hotel in Seefeld, a picturesque village in the Tiroler mountains of Austria. After you conclude your initial 10 weeks of E-Learning, you and the other dentists in your group are invited to continue your studies on location at the academy. Over the course of 10 weeks, our great teachers will help you advance to B2+ level of Dutch, which is the level you need to start working in a Dutch dental clinic.
Our course program has been developed in-house by the BGB Academy, and it focuses specifically on dentistry. This means that, next to the Dutch language in general, you will be learning a lot about Dutch dentistry terms, how to address patients, and language conventions in the work place. This will help you feel more at ease when you start your first treatment with a Dutch patient.
Near the end of the course, we will start preparing you for the Dutch language exam. Passing this language exam is obligatory for everyone who wants to be included in the Dutch registry for healthcare professionals (BIG). Being registered with the BIG, in turn, is a requirement to work as a dentist in the Netherlands without supervision. Therefore, during the final phase of our course, we will be optimally preparing you for the exam.
Apart from helping you learn speak Dutch at a high level, your 10 weeks at the BGB Academy will simply be an amazing experience. You will be studying alongside other dentists who are doing the program with you, which means you will be going to the Netherlands with new friends. Meanwhile, the hotel staff will take excellent care of you, and there are plenty of activities to take part in around Seefeld for when you are not studying.
BGB: A steady contract and job safety
Working with BGB
Part of the contract you sign with BGB Dentistry is a job guarantee. This means that you will receive a monthly salary once you move to the Netherlands. While you will work in a Dutch clinic, your direct employer is BGB, and we are the ones who will paying your salary. This allows us to give you the security of a good salary, no matter where you start working.
The exact height of your salary depends on several factors, such as your experience and the revenue you expect to generate while working in the clinic. We will discuss and agree on the salary before you sign the contract. There are also milestones at which your salary will increase automatically, such as when you pass your Dutch language exam.
Meanwhile, the expenses of the education are covered by BGB. In return for this and a steady contract, we only ask your commitment: the contract lasts for a period of 3 years.
Finding work and housing
Welcome to the Netherlands!
From the moment you start learning Dutch in Seefeld, our account managers Robin and Catherine start their search for a clinic. We only work with clinics where we feel you will have the ability to grow professionally and start realising your ambitions.
It is possible that you will already have interviews with clinic owners while you are studying Dutch in Seefeld. These interviews may take place over Skype, but sometimes clinic owners will even travel to Seefeld to meet you and the other dentists in person. Therefore, it is probable that you will already know which clinic you are going to work at before you finish your language course!
BGB works with clinics spread out all over the country. Because the offer of available clinics varies, we are not able to say before you sign with us, in which part of the country you are going to work. However, the Netherlands is a small country that is very well connected through roads and public transport. The big city is never far away!
We will also help you with all the other things you need to get started here, whether it is finding a house, arranging documents, applying for the 30% ruling tax benefit or registering with the Dutch registry for healthcare professionals.
A continued adventure
Staying in touch
It is true that the main part of our work consists of helping you learn the language, finding you a clinic and making sure you are settled.
However, there are a lot of things you will deal with when moving to a new country, and it may occur that sometimes, you just don’t really know what to do. BGB is always ready to help you with whatever issue or question you may have. After all, it is our objective to make sure you are satisfied with your career in the Netherlands not just on your first work day, but throughout your entire Dutch dentistry career.
It may also occur that your ambitions start to evolve after having worked in the Netherlands for a while. Perhaps you would like to become an independent dentist, or you dream of running your own clinic. We have experience with all of these things, and we will use that experience to help you to the best of our ability.
When I first spoke with BGB, it didn't take me long to decide I wanted to go to the Netherlands. And if you'd ask me now, I would do it all over again!
I must say, after I first spoke with BGB members, it didn't take me long to decide I wanted to go to the Netherlands. I was always interested in other cultures and lifestyles and because of that, it wasn't so difficult to make a decision. The only thing that stood in my way was learning the Dutch language. I understood that it was neccessary, but for me, that was the only disadvantage of the plan. But after a while, as Dutch people would say - het valt mee (it's not so bad)! Not only was I in love with the language, but spending time in Seefeld, the most beautiful Austrian village in the middle of the Alps, was definitely an experience I could never forget. Everything is easier in good company, especially with the family, and that is exactly what we have become. Doing everything together, laughing, learning, skiing, hiking, having fun and preparing for the next adventure, the time just flew by. The thing that was once the one thing that held me back, soon became the biggest advantage of the journey. If you ask me, I would do it all over again! And once more. 😉
BGB made it possible for me to move forward in my career and get a chance to stay in the wonderful country of the Netherlands.
Just wanted to say a huge thank you to the magic team of BGB Academy with helping me get through with my AKV taaltoets. It was not easy at all but they put me at ease with as much comfort and human warmth as possible. Actually they saved my future and made it possible for me to move forward in my career and acquire a chance to stay in the wonderful country of the Netherlands.
BGB were so helpful at getting us settled in, and helped us get great jobs in a clinic where we fitted in great.
My partner and I moved to the Netherlands with the help of BGB and we are both so happy with how it went. Everything went really smoothly, despite the coronavirus pandemic, and BGB always had a plan A, B and C to solve any problems that came up with covid.
The Dutch teachers were great, and made learning the language in such a short time interesting and fun.
BGB were so helpful at getting us settled in, and helped us get great jobs in a clinic where we fitted in great.
Every person we have come into contact with in BGB have been so friendly and helpful. They really have a great bunch of people working together to help dentists with their new lives.
I don't think we could have organised the move on our own, so we are really happy that we found BGB to help us.
I had a great experience with BGB, I can wholeheartedly recommend them to everyone who wants to start their career in Holland.
I graduated as a dentist in Budapest, Hungary in the summer of 2020. I was planning for a while to move to the Netherlands and to start my career here. Since my partner is Dutch, I could speak the „everyday language”, but my skills needed a boost to reach a professional level. I contacted BGB about the help they could provide me. It was very important to me not only to pass the exam, but to have the confidence in my Dutch to be able to deal with the everyday challenges of the clinical work. The offer I got from BGB was an intensive 2-day private course before the 2 parts of the exam. The course was tailored to my needs, I learned the right amount of theory and practical skills. The teachers were well prepared and flexible, they were very helpful to answer my questions between the course and the exam too. Getting the proper training helped me to not be so nervous about the exam and to easily pass it. During the course and the exam I got to know the people who work at BGB. They were very kind from the first moment on, even on the first day (which is usually a bit awkward) I was integrated and felt like this is not my first time seeing these people. I had a great experience with BGB, I can wholeheartedly recommend them to everyone who wants to start their career in the Netherlands and who wants to face the challenges of learning the language with the help of a great team.
BGB values you as a dentist and is always by your side. I'm happy to consider myself a part of their team.
Taking the big step of moving to a new country with a new language and a different culture is
always difficult. Doubts, nerves, insecurity… we all have those feelings. They’re part of our daily
life. But when we make a decision it’s always good to have people by your side who help you,
and that makes you feel that you are doing the right thing. BGB, in addition to giving you the
opportunity to work and feel you valued as a dentist, is always there by your side. I’m happy to
consider myself part of BGB team and for the experience that I never thought I would have
dared to have without them.
When I speak and write and think in Dutch, I can say that everything is possible with BGB.
When writing about my experience with BGB, I worried if I would be able to say so much in a few sentences. I also think I will have to use some Dutch words!
Approximately 2 years went by since I made the decision that I wanted to continue building a career abroad, and signing a contract with BGB. For 2 years I communicated with people from BGB, got to know them well, gained full trust in them and wrapped up all my jobs, obligations and plans in my home country, survived a few months of living in the Corona crisis, postponed my departure and then reactivated it
And here I am. I have been living and working in the Netherlands for 2 months now. When I look behind me and remember mid-October 2020, when I started online Dutch classes, I didn't know how to say anything in Dutch. And now, 6 months later, when I speak and write and think in Dutch, I can say that everything is possible due to BGB and their indescribable organization and my dedicated work, determination and a great desire to work in the Netherlands.
And all the way from online classes, to the Seefeld trip in the middle of Corona travel ban, classes with Dutch teachers, all day environment of Dutch language and culture but in stark contrast to nature, in the hilly Tyrolean Alps, total Tyrol lockdown in February, inability to communicate in person with the owners of dental clinics, BIG exam, the uncertainty of the trip from Seefeld to the Netherlands, everything, absolutely everything, went smoothly, really smoothly, cheerfully and with a lot of laughter and unforgettable memories.
If I had set out on this adventure earlier, I would not have had the privilege of hanging out with more than 10 extraordinary and dear people every day, hiking and skiing on weekends for 10 weeks while all Tyrol travel is delayed, when not going on winter hollidays because borders are closed. I just then enjoyed it to the fullest, studied, had fun, progressed and finally got to where I had long imagined myself to be.
Finally, I would like to summarize my BGB experience in 5 words, Dutch words:
Leuk, gezellig, genieten, lekker, fantastisch.
If you don't understand them, use a dictionary or contact BGB and start learning Dutch! (Het zal alleen maar meevallen.)
